America's New Swim Sweetheart

In many ways Missy Franklin is like any other teenage girl. She likes to play sports, hang with her friends, and relaxes by listening to music. She wants to go into broadcast journalism and says her mom is her biggest influence. Sounds pretty typical, right? But this 17-year-old Colorado teen is already in the history books for qualifying to swim more events in a single Olympics than any other American woman has before.

It started at the US trials when on the first day she set an American record in the 100-meter backstroke. She was ecstatic, but far from finished. Missy continued wowing everyone with second-place finishes in the 200 free and 100 free – extremely good results for someone so very young. While athletes much older than Missy might be feeling an enormous amount of pressure, she has taken her impressive performance at the trials as a confidence boost. Instead of stressed, she’s relieved. She says the love and support of her family, friends, and coach are what keep her from having a major freak out. What does she have planned for the London games?
